Planting Seeds with Free Printable

Materials for Starting Seeds Indoors

  • A container for planting seeds (make sure it has holes for drainage)
  • Seed-starter soil
  • Seeds (included with the book – how convenient!)
  • Lolly sticks (that’s UK speak for popsicle sticks)
  • Water

How to Start Seeds with Kids

  1. Choose Your Seeds: Your book comes with a lovely assortment of seeds. Let the little ones help decide which seeds to plant first. They’ll be chuffed to bits to help choose!
  2. Prepare the Soil: Fill your seed-starting containers with soil. Give it a good moisten before planting your seeds. (Watering after planting can make the seeds go walkabout.)
  3. Plant the Seeds: Have a look at the seed packet for instructions on how deep to plant the seeds. Pop 2-3 seeds in each compartment. (Tiny seeds might escape, but no worries!)
  4. Label Your Seeds: Write the names of the seeds on lolly sticks and stick them in the soil. This way, you won’t forget which is which.
  5. Cover the Tray: Loosely cover your tray with plastic to keep things nice and humid. If your container has a lid, even better!
  6. Watch and Wait: Patience, my young gardeners! Some seeds may sprout quickly (beans or tomatoes are speedy), while others might take their time.
  7. Light and Water: Once seeds sprout, remove the plastic cover and make sure they get plenty of light. Good old British sunlight or sunny American rays will do, or you can use grow lights if you have them. Water your sprouts as needed.
  8. Track Progress: Use our free printable journal to draw pictures and record how many sprouts you see each day. It’s like being a plant detective!
  9. Transplanting: When your plants are big enough and the weather’s just right, it’s time to transplant them outside. They’ll be ready to face the great British outdoors or the sunny American garden!
